Art in Bloom, 2022
From Pam Nelson and Erika Rodriguez:
Our object was the Bust of Prince Ankhhaf
Prince Ankhhaf was one of the most important men of his time. He was a Vizier (Prime Minister) to the king and overseer of all royal construction works and may have overseen the building of the second great pyramid at Giza and the sphinx. An MFA guide explained to us that this was one of only two Musuem pieces that was moved to the midwest for protection during World War II.
The artist created the bust out of limestone and then covered it with a thin layer of plaster that was then painted and plastered, giving it the terra cotta color. The bust is the most convincing example of realistic portraiture to survive from the Old Kingdom.
We chose to bring out the wonderful terracotta patina by blending muted shades of rust, cream, grey, and peach with stronger shades of salmon, burnt orange, deep red.
The shape reflects the solid form of the bust.
