About Us
Since its founding by 20 women in 1928, the Garden Club of Concord has been dedicated to its stated mission to promote the appreciation of and assistance in the preservation, restoration and development of gardens and the natural environment in the Concord community.
Over the years, the club has worked with the Concord Free Public Library, the Concord Museum, the Emerson House, Emerson Hospital, Minuteman National Historic Park, the Concord Housing Authority, and the Town of Concord among others to create and advocate for conservation and beautification of the town.
Today our club of 140 members continues this work:
Plant Sale
Our annual plant sale held the second Saturday in May, funds our grants and scholarship programs. Each year, the club distributes funds to community organizations through grants that support our mission. In addition, we provide a scholarship to a graduating senior at Concord-Carlisle High School who wishes to pursue studies in the fields of horticulture, environmental studies and related subjects.
Town Gardens
The club designed, installed, and tends to the perennial gardens in front of the Town House.
The new garden we installed in 2019 and now maintain at the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail in West Concord relies upon drought resistant and native plants.
Council on Aging
The club added a new annual event to our community calendar in 2021: a Holiday workshop for the Concord Council on Aging. Club members designed a fun floral project suitable for gifting, and enjoyed an afternoon helping workshop attendees put their arrangement together.
Holiday Wreaths
The club creates and installs holiday wreaths on municipal buildings throughout town each year.
Cans for Caring
In early December, the club creates decorated boxwood trees for distribution to recipients of the Meals on Wheels Program through Minuteman Senior Services.
Concord Museum “Family Trees” Festival
The club annually selects a children’s book and decorates a tree for this popular program hosted by the Concord Museum.
Arbor Day
Each year the club works with the town’s arborist to select an appropriate site and donates a tree to celebrate Arbor Day in April.
Spring Outreach Project
Every March, members gather to create a “touch of spring” with fresh flowers that are delivered to 150 senior residents who reside in nursing facilities, assisted living, or at home.
Art in Bloom
In April of every year, two talented members create an arrangement at the Museum of Fine Arts annual “Art in Bloom.”
Concord Agricultural Day and Farmer’s Market
In early September, the garden club participates in the annual fair that celebrates the bounty of Concord’s many local farms. We sponsor a garden tour of home kitchen gardens that demonstrate the many ways to grow food and flowers responsibly.
